This Was Unexpected

Be warned, this may be my longest post yet.

I have been putting off this post for over a week now. Having returned from Lake Isabella fresh with pictures of the mountains and stories to tell, I was blindsided by The Adventures of Beka‘s post, in which she nominated me for a Liebster Award, which aims to recognize new bloggers to the blogosphere.

I am honored that she thinks so highly of my blog and of my photography, enough that she would post about it on her own blog. Honestly, it means a lot.

However, like her, I had no idea how to respond or how to write this post. I mean, I knew that I would be accepting the award and passing it on, but I had no idea what I would actually write. And, in some essential ways, this feels like an acceptance speech of sorts, and I hate having to perform in front of people. Okay, that’s not entirely true; I have some unforgettable experiences performing in band and drumline in high school, but those were groups. I have never been comfortable with the spotlight being only on me.

So, as I said, it took me a while to figure out how I wanted to respond or at least how I wanted to structure it. Thankfully, after finding the rules and the reading through The Adventures of Beka’s post, a general structure has been recommended.

So first, I believe, are the random facts:

  • The summer that I graduated high school (2000), I spent around two weeks in Ghana, West Africa. Because of that trip, I missed freshmen orientation and arrived at college only two days before classes began-with food poisoning. That whole experience irreversibly changed my view of American culture and its priorities.
  • The first book that I remember reading alone, which was in 1st grade, was J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. It got me hooked on fantasy novels, which I still read to this day.
  • I have been divorced, which was tough to endure at the time (a few years ago), but which was for the better in hindsight. Among many things, it was what led me to buying my Nikon D300S, the camera that I use for this blog and my first DSLR.
  • In the summer of 2004, with one semester left to go before graduating from college (the first time, haha), I spent close to a month studying in Oxford, England at Wycliffe Hall. This experience changed my views on education, as those weeks were more rigorous, intense, and rewarding than whole semesters at home
  • One day, I want to make my own cheese and brew my own beer. I have the knowledge; I just need to buy the gear and take the leap.

After the random facts, now it’s time to answer The Adventures of Beka‘s questions.

1. What was the happiest moment in the last week for you?

It was seeing family on the day after Thanksgiving. So many of my generation have grown, married, and now have families of their own, that the actual holy days are consumed by visiting several places. So, my dad’s side of the family began a tradition a few years ago: Instead of stressing about the day of Thanksgiving, let’s all get together and bring our leftovers on the day after. That way, we get the food and the family, but none of the stress. Seeing so much family together gives me hope that I will have one of my own someday.

2. What makes you really really mad?

I used to have a fearful temper growing up, and I have since learned to keep it under control. So, if at all possible, I don’t get really really angry anymore. Or, I have safe ways of releasing it, like sparring or exercising or hiking. However, to answer the question as it was intended, it is when people lack empathy and integrity. Be honest and own up to what you have chosen to do. Additionally, share the pain and suffering of others and stand in their shoes, literally-if at all possible-and metaphorically; have compassion for your fellow man.

3. What is your favorite photograph?

Do you know what you’re asking? How many photos there are on my hard drive? Haha. I feel like it’s cheating if I do the whole, “I can’t choose just one but here are a few/several top ones” dance. So, I am going to try really hard to choose just one. Here:

Snow Hiking4. Who is your favorite superhero?

My favorite would have to be the X-Man, Colossus. Fiercely protective of his sister and friends, and he can turn into organic metal. What’s not to like? Plus, I always liked that, while one of the most physically imposing and strongest of the X-men, he was also one of the least aggressive and violent, in most circumstances at least.

5. If you could eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

It would probably be burox, a German pastry that is typically filled with sauteed cabbage, onions, and ground beef, and then baked in the oven. They are delicious, yet time consuming to make. However, since a batch yields around 12-16, you will be eating them for days as leftovers, which is always nice.

Alright, it is now time for my own nominees. In some way, shape, or form, I think these are all awesome. Well, on second thought, I don’t have any nominees. The rules post here says that nominees are to have less than 200 followers, the idea being that the award should recognize people that are new to blogging. Well, everyone that I follow, save Beka (thank you again!), the person that nominated me, had hundreds if not thousands of followers.

So, I need to go find small blogs more so eventually I can edit and change this. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the answers and random facts that I have provided.

    • Personally, I re-read The Silmarillion more frequently, but they are both good.

The added difficulty, too, was whether I should choose a previously posted picture or a new one.

  1. Hi! I am leaving this comment because I would like for you to update your Liebster Award post with the correct link. I am going to be deleting my old site (Lorraine Reguly’s Life) and so would really appreciate it if you could update your post with a link to Wording Well. This is my new site, and because I have moved my “old” post to my “new” site, you will be left with a broken link if you don’t change it. I don’t want this to happen! Besides, is still the same post it always was, but the domain name has changed. This may not seem like a big deal to you, but it is to me. The internet is forever – or at least until we change things, so, please, can you change this for me? (Thanks!)
